How to Get a Prescription

If you think you may need a new prescription, please make an appointment with the doctor. Our practice nurse/nurse practitioner and the local walk-in centre (Prestwich) can also offer advice for common ailments.

If you have previously been given a prescription for a straightforward condition, such as hay fever, eczema, constipation, we may be able to issue a prescription after a telephone consultation. Please ask the receptionist first to check.

Your local pharmacist should be able to give you advice for non-prescription medication, they are able to prescribe to a limited number of conditions e.g. sore throat, threadworms, nits etc.

How to Get a Repeat Prescription

Repeat prescriptions are normally for patients with long-term conditions who receive regular treatment, your Doctor or Nurse will decide who can have a repeat prescription.

From time to time we will ask you to see your doctor or nurse to review your medication. We do this to monitor your illness and medication. Most medications are reviewed every 3 - 6 months.

New users are required to register for online services. This system enables you to see a copy of the current repeat medication that has been authorised for you by the doctor and for which you have not yet used the quota of issues before the doctor needs to review your medication

To register for online services please fill in the online form here in order to receive an electronic letter to your registered email address (Please ensure that you check your Inbox and Junk Mail Box regularly for the letter). Once you have received your letter simply follow the 'How to Complete your Registration Guide'.  Remember there is no need to register more than once, registering online will include access to online appointments

Patients are advised that in order to activate and access your Repeat Prescriptions online, photographic proof of identification will need to be presented in person at your GP Practice.

When your account has been created you will be to order your repeat medication and book appointments. 

To Request a Repeat Prescription

Please allow up to 48 hours when requesting your Prescriptions. In exceptionally busy periods (After bank holidays and some Mondays) there may be delays if your request is urgent let us know why.

We would prefer you to complete the counterfoil side of the prescription as this reduces mistakes and also reduces waste of medication caused by people ordering all medication when only a few are required.

Whenever possible please give the exact drug names when ordering

You can order your medication by:

  •   Ordering Online
  •   Via Post
  •   At the surgery

We will not be able take telephone requests for repeat prescriptions because of the possibility or error. In exceptional circumstances such as medical emergencies and illness they may be ready a little later.

You may arrange for collection by pharmacy of your choice.

Children under 12 years old are NOT allowed to collect prescriptions from the surgery.

Repeat Prescription ordering


We are aware that many community and online pharmacies are diligent in contacting patients to ascertain their requirements within seven days of ordering their next prescription. However there are several pharmacies who do not adopt this approach. This has led to patient complaints and the issue of waste medication remains a significant clinical risk and cost burden to the NHS.

As a practice we also plan to improve repeat medicines management. This includes empowering patients to take an active role in their health and care by ordering their own medication, increasing the usage of electronic repeat dispensing (eRD) via EPS and utilising online ordering.

 As a practice we have taken the decision that from 1st January 2020 we will NOT accept ANY prescription requests from any pharmacy, including online pharmacies.

 Please note that the collection of prescriptions from GP practices will not be affected.

 Patients (or their carer, nominated family member/friend) will have to order prescriptions directly from the GP practice themselves via the one of the following methods:

  •     Online ordering through smartphone app or computer
  •     Dropping the repeat prescription request off at the GP practice
  •     Posting the repeat prescription request to the GP practice

The following exceptions will apply:

  • Patients who are housebound who cannot order on line, or do not have a carer or representative that can order on their behalf
  • Patients using a Monitored Dosage System
  • Patients who have a learning disability who do not have a carer or representative who can order on their behalf
  • Patients who have dementia who do not have a carer or representative who can order on their behalf
  •  Patients in a care home

ANY prescription request received from ANY pharmacy after the 01st January 2020 will NOT be processed. There is an expectation that pharmacies will appropriately communicate with patients, and patients should not be inconvenienced or experience undue problems due to a lack of co-operation.
